Comprehensive winterization for RVs in freezing climates. Use this printable checklist as a practical walk-through before, during, or after the RV task.
Water System Protection
- Drain fresh water tank completely using low point drains
- Drain water heater (remove drain plug, open pressure relief valve)
- Open all faucets, flush toilet, run water pump until dry
- Add RV antifreeze to all drains and P-traps (pink antifreeze only)
- Run antifreeze through water pump system until pink at all faucets
- Add antifreeze to toilet bowl and flush into black tank
- Pour antifreeze down all drains to protect gray tank and plumbing
Exterior Winterization
- Clean and treat all rubber seals with appropriate conditioner
- Remove and store external water filter (prevent freeze damage)
- Cover air conditioning unit with breathable cover (not plastic)
- Apply protectant to tires and cover with UV-resistant covers
- Clean exterior thoroughly and apply protective wax coating
- Install breathable, properly fitted RV cover (not cheap tarp)
- Secure cover with proper tie-downs to prevent wind damage
Interior & Systems Preparation
- Remove ALL food, liquids, medications, and perishables
- Clean refrigerator and freezer thoroughly, prop doors open with towel
- Place moisture absorbers (DampRid) throughout interior
- Remove batteries for indoor storage or connect to battery tender
- Turn off all propane tanks and electrical systems at main panels
- Set mouse/pest deterrents (Irish Spring soap, peppermint oil)
- Remove valuable electronics, important documents, and personal items
