What this PDF covers
Safe operation and basic maintenance for RV generators. Use this printable checklist as a practical walk-through before, during, or after the RV task.
Pre-Operation Safety Check
- Check generator oil level (dipstick should show FULL)
- Verify fuel level and fuel condition (no water contamination)
- Check air filter condition (clean = better performance)
- Ensure adequate ventilation around generator (3+ feet clearance)
- Check exhaust system is clear and secure (no obstructions)
- Verify generator is level for proper oil circulation
Starting & Operation
- Turn off all major electrical loads before starting (A/C, microwave)
- Follow manufacturer's starting procedure exactly (don't shortcut)
- Allow generator to warm up 2-3 minutes before adding load
- Monitor voltage and frequency gauges during operation
- Add electrical loads gradually (don't shock the system)
- Respect campground quiet hours (typically 8PM-8AM)
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Change oil every 50-100 hours or annually (whichever first)
- Replace air filter seasonally or when visibly dirty
- Keep spare spark plugs and basic filters on hand
- Run generator monthly even when not camping (exercise run)
- Use fuel stabilizer for storage over 30 days
- Keep maintenance log with hours and service dates
